1991-92 Retro Myrtle Beach Hurricanes

Continuing with the theme of former Toronto Blue Jays affiliates in the South Atlantic League, I'm obliged to discuss Toronto's presence in South Carolina which began in 1981 with the Florence Blue Jays, who in 1987 became the Myrtle Beach Blue Jays.

The team rebranded as the Myrtle Beach Hurricanes in 1991 and after the 1992 season, moved to Hagerstown, MD to become the newest incarnation of the Hagerstown Suns where their affiliation with Toronto continued.

Because the team only existed for two seasons, finding an original hat is an exercise in futility so when I learned Hat Club was releasing a retro, I had to pick it up.

I had some reservations about pulling the trigger on this cap because the logo is noticeably larger than the OG. Based on how fast the hat sold out, I believe this was a conscious decision by Hat Club as perhaps they felt they'd sell more hats with an aggrandized logo. For reference, here are some photos of the more dainty logo on the OG:

One last thing: because the Copa de la Diversion is in full swing and I love that campaign so much, I also wanted to share a photo of the Myrtle Beach Pelicanos hat, which also is not in my possession...yet!

Even though the logo on the Hurricanes retro from Hat Club is a little large and in-charge for a sometimes-purist such as myself, I'm not going to put it on the Trading Block however please don't hesitate to reach out if you want any other cap from there and you are willing to part with any of the following hats on my Wish List.

For a deeper dive on the topic, I recommend checking out Fun While It Lasted's write-up on the history of the Blue Jays in Myrtle BeachAs always, thanks for coming back to read about baseball hat geekery. I've got comments disabled here so if you'd like to discuss a trade or simply just chat about hats, please feel free to connect via the following social sites:

Saw this one on a Hooters waitress once. Then I saw it on my floor. Zing!
