1989 World Series - Oakland Athletics “Battle of the Bay”

Throughout this blog's history, my pettiness as a San Francisco Giants fan has led me to systematically avoiding write-ups of caps worn by my team's rivals. While there have been less than a handful of Los Angeles Dodgers posts over the years, this week’s post is my first time ever featuring an Oakland Athletics cap as a Fresh Fitted Friday selection.

In my defense, the previously featured Dodgers caps were (objectively speaking) absolute bangers that I mostly posted in hopes of finding a trade partner. And today my justification for breaking the A’s streak is January 12 being “Kiss a Ginger Day” which left me choice but to pay tribute to Mark McGwire who is indisputably the All-Time Mack Daddy of Baseball Gingers.

Owning an item commemorating 1989’s “Battle of the Bay” is obviously not something I would ever own personally but that did not stop me from scooping up this beauty as a gift to a friend who is an A’s fan.

The 1989 World Series patch brings about some mixed emotions for me when I see it but it is an iconic design. It also looks a lot better on this cap than on the Giants version of this release which I regrettably purchased for myself many years ago!

I watched a few hours of the 1989 World Series tonight to confirm that a green undervisor would have been historically accurate but I welcome the grey version here as it looks a bit more crisp, especially with the white sweatband.

I can also confirm that the batterman was not found on A's caps back then but just as with the grey undervisor, it is a nice touch here so I am good with it.

Big shout out to my friend for allowing me to photograph his cap. In feel as though he should get partial credit for assisting with this week's post as I would not have been able to honor Big Mac otherwise. My heart goes out to him as well as all the other A's fans out there who will have to reckon with the team moving to Las Vegas in a few years.

As a former Bay Area guy, I am disappointed that a significant sports entity is leaving the region and I wonder what teams those disenfranchised fans will turn to next. I cannot imagine them warming up to an American League West rival but if their distaste for Giants is not too great, I would welcome them. Otherwise, I could see them turning toward the Dodgers out of spite!

This week's Fresh Fitted Friday selection is not going on the Trading Block however please don't hesitate to reach out if you want any other cap from that list and you are willing to part with any of the hats on my Wish List.
