My recent trend of posting caps that are of the vintage, retro and fauxback variety continues as this week's Fresh Fitted Friday hones in on the latter category. In fact I selected this Erie SeaWolves cap in recognition of today's date (August 14) being the designated time to celebrate "814 Day" in reference to the area code of the Erie region in Pennsylvania.
I urge you to scroll down to check out the photos and captions of the cap I’ve selected, but first, let me share some insights on this lovable cap logo. The fauxback logo was designed as a “What If?” nod to a cap the SeaWolves would have worn from the 1930s to the 1960s, as stated on the team’s site.
Vintage-inspired logos usually get my attention, and this week’s cap is no exception. I’ve written about the current SeaWolves logo and its predecessors, but it was only recently that I discovered the team’s brief affiliation with the Pittsburgh Pirates only lasted from 1995 to 1998. This whole time I was mistakenly under the impression they were still Baby because a “sea wolf” is an archaic term referring to seafaring marauders!
Erie also had an ephemeral relationship with the Anaheim Angels which began in 1999 and ended in 2001 when the Detroit Tigers became their parent club. That partnership continues today however while my stance remains that the SeaWolves moniker is best suited for a team associated with the Pirates, Erie's opportunity to adopt a nautical yet feline-adjacent identity has not entirely sailed on by.
On a somewhat unrelated note, I am a fan of John Oliver’s reimagining of the team as the Erie Moon Mammoths, but I am admittedly puzzled by the “Flagship City Kitties” rebrand in 2026. According to that site, the "Flagship City" name is a reference to the USS Niagara, a key player in the Battle of Lake Erie during the War of 1812 while the "kitties" aspect is a tie-in to the Tigers.
The “Flagship City” campaign is one I genuinely appreciate because I grew up in a naval-oriented town, but I am rightly confused by a canine-centric team occasionally morphing into “Baby Tigers” while the Lynchburg Hillcats, who refashioned themselves as the Howl City Growlers before the 2026 season, should probably have offered up that design to Erie.
In any case, the Growlers’ logo has been immensely popular so far, and Erie’s fauxback and “Kitties” alternates are performing well too so I don't really see an issue that needs fixing here. The main factor to consider here though is Erie, despite being a city in western Pennsylvania and only a two hour drive from Pittsburgh, shares a stronger regional connection with Detroit, which makes that affiliation more meaningful.
I should note that I believe Erie could still have an opportunity to pivot from the "Kitties" by capitalizing on the imagery of Otters and Seals, which are both cat-like enough to honor their big league affiliate as well as pay homage to their waterside location. I do hope no one focuses on the fact that neither otters nor seals inhabit Lake Erie!
Regardless of all these minutiae, if you’re still reading my words at this point, it’s evident that you might actually enjoy hearing tall tales about the sea. Whether you read along or skipped to the photos below, I just want to conclude by wishing a Happy 814 Day to those who celebrate!
