Denver Bears (Pillbox Snapback)

Recent posts have been a bit more effusive than what is befitting of a perfunctory Friday dispatch, so with this special "Labor Day" edition of Fresh Fitted Friday post, I solemnly swear to put forth the bare minimum amount of effort to honor the spirit of the holiday.

I mentioned in last week's post that my San Francisco Giants would be in town playing the New York Mets, so I am certainly looking forward to catching hopefully two out of three games of that series, but if my schedule were a bit more manageable, I would have made a push to go see Phish play their three-show set at Dicks Sporting Goods Park in Colorado this weekend.

Accepting circumstances beyond one's control can be challenging, so as much as I would love to be enjoying good times in Colorado with friends, staying in town to catch some games where my favorite (but terrible) team is playing is a fine option! So while I cannot physically be in Denver this weekend, the Denver Bears cap I am sharing with you folks is helping me cope!

I have long been fascinated by the pillbox cap style and its proliferation in baseball during the 1976 season which was the timely intersection of the United States celebrating 250 years of independence in the same year the National League marked its centennial anniversary.  

I should note the logo featured on the front of this cap 

As we gaze upon the snapback nature of this cap, I should note that the logo featured on its front did not appear until 1982 and all in-game photos I have seen of the team during that period lead me to the conclusion the Denver Bears never wore this cap on-field let alone in 1976.

I promised at the outset that I would not blather on this week and so far I have made good on that agreement however if you're interested in learning more about the history of pillbox caps, I recommend this fascinating article on a Substack page I have found to be informative.
