New York Yankees - 1996 World Series Retro

The blog needed a cleanse after last week's Dodgers-adjacent post, and while I was hoping for this week's theme to be a celebration of the New York Yankees clinching their ALDS series, their season is now over after being swept by the Tampa Bay Rays.

Five months have passed since the last time I shared a Yankees cap here and it is hard to believe that their record was 26-13 at that point. A lot can change during the course of a game, let alone over a stretch of a few weeks, months, or years, and yet, the ALDS outcome is fitting considering the Yankees' 93-68 regular season record was second best to the Rays.

As a Giants fan, all that matters to me now is that the Los Angeles Dodgers do not advance past the NLCS, so I'm cheering on the Brewers as I hope their National League-leading best record translates into them beating the Dodgers —who had the second-best winning percentage—in this upcoming series just as the Rays took care of the Yankees.

The energy in New York City is palpable when one of its teams is in the midst of a playoffs push, and I would have loved to see excitement around town similar to what the New York Knicks generated during their championship run. What would have made it even more special is that this year is the 30th anniversary of the Yankees' 1996 World Series win.

At first I was not enthused about an embroidered side patch, but now am thankful at least that its placement is historically correct as I picked it up before New Era started placing their own branding on the wearer's left side. In addition to the New Era flag embroidery being distracting, it also shifts any special cap patches and embroidery to the right side.

Even though this is a retro cap, it features sweatband tags that have not been used in so many years that the cap seems vintage to me now.

The last World Series title for the Yankees came in 2009, which was one year before I bought this cap soon after moving to New York in 2010. Ironically enough, the 16 years between 2010 and now feel like such a shorter gap to me than the 14 years between 1996 and 2010.

This week's Fresh Fitted Friday selection is not going on the Trading Block however please don't hesitate to reach out if you want any other cap from that list and you are willing to part with any of the hats on my Wish List.

As always, thanks for coming back to read about baseball hat geekery. If you'd like to discuss a trade or simply just chat about hats, please feel free to connect via the following social sites:
