2015 Richmond Flying Squirrels - Fresh Fitted Friday!!!!

01/20/2022 update: I fixed the broken image links and some text in the paragraphs below which were a complete mess. Rest assured, I left the overall content and tone consistent with the time in which this post was first published

Like John "Hannibal" Smith, I love it when a plan comes together and what I don't love is when a plan falls apart. I intended to a story and some photos of a fresh and new fitted last Friday but my plan was beset by sweltering heat at the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Virginia.

Even though my plan was temporarily halted, I consider myself to be resilient so I'm going to show those photos today. With no further ado, I present to you this week's Fresh Fitted Friday selection which is the cap worn by the team of Virginia's state capital, the Richmond Flying Squirrels.

The Flying Squirrels identity was one of the agency's earliest creations when it was known as Plan B Branding and I appreciate that the outline silhouette resembles Virginia's footprint on the map of the U.S.

Standard sweatband tags plus sadly, one that reads "Made in China"

Black and Red batterman is the most classic thing about this logo.

Here's Richmond's mascot, Nutzy the Flying Squirrel... acting nutty.

I imagine Nutzy was seen as the Poochie of minor league mascots when he first arrived to town but my gut tells me it was Diamond Duck who really filled that role based on the looks of him and his emergence during the the burgeoning MILB wackiness of the mid-1990's. Of thing I am certain is Nutzy has a lot more moxie than the Braves' mascot from 1996-2008.

A logo featuring a fictitious/obscure animal with clenched teeth is Brandiose's calling card and the Squirrels identity is in line with others they've created like Lehigh IronPigs, Akron RubberDucks as well as the seahorse they are using for my hometown team, the Norfolk Tides. Sadly that rebrand received lots of criticism in Hampton Roads according to a recent SportsLogos.net article.

Brandiose is no stranger to mixed reactions from fans. In fact, a polarized reaction is the next best thing you can have after an instant hit because it means people are at least talking about the logo.

The Flying Squirrels aesthetic was not well received off the bat either however this SportsLogos.net article about the fans finally warming up to the logo gives me faith that the folks in my former hometown will follow suit.

This week's Fresh Fitted Friday selection is not going on the Trading Block however please don't hesitate to reach out if you want any other cap from that list and you are willing to part with any of the hats on my Wish List.

As always, thanks for coming back to read about baseball hat geekery. I've got comments disabled here so if you'd like to discuss a trade or simply just chat about hats, please feel free to connect via the following social sites:
