1993 Baltimore Orioles - Fresh Fitted Friday!!!!

It has been almost two full months since my last post and while the holidays kept me occupied, things have been slow in regards to picking up new caps that I have been excited about. Luckily, I went home to visit my folks in Virginia and brought back some old hats to spice up the rotation such as this 1993 Baltimore Orioles cap in celebration of January 5 being National Bird Day. In 1993, the Orioles were in the midst of a renaissance with Cal Ripken inching closer to breaking Lou Gehrig's record of consecutive games played as well as Oriole Park at Camden Yards hosting that year's All-Star Game just one season after its opening.  Over the years writing this blog, I have made more than a few mentions of the New York Yankees being one of the last teams to switch over to caps with grey undervisors in 1994 but this week's Fresh Fitted Friday shows that the Orioles were also holding onto the green til the very end. I am not sure how much longer I will be able to resist popping

Winston-Salem Spirits

Ok so before we get started here, I have something to admit: this week's edition of Fresh Fitted Friday features photos of a cap that isn't actually in my possession but it's one that I just had to share as the cap logo  worn by the Winston-Salem Spirits from 1990 through 1995  is a Carolina League classic that evokes warm memories for me when I look at it. As long as I've been into minor league baseball, there have been hats that piqued my interest yet never committed to buying. This Spirits hat is a great example of that because there were so many other logos that drew me in while this one was in its prime that it got lost in the mix but oh, how I pine for it now that I rarely see it for sale anywhere. What's worse is I'm feeling a sort of double regret because I came across one that was too small a while back but the seller wanted $100 which I felt was too much to spend on one hat. I'm sure I would have appreciated this hat as much as four $25 hats

1988-91 Lynchburg Red Sox

I realize that not all of my readers are football fans but I really do think most of y'all are at least a little pumped up for the Super Series, er, World Bowl, um, I mean Super Bowl this weekend. I'm obviously more of a baseball fan but I do enjoy watching "The Big Game" with friends plus you can't deny the awesomeness of the food at Super Bowl parties. The dilemma for this year's Super Bowl matchup is almost as bad as what I faced during the 2018 World Series: having to make a decision on whether to root for Boston or Los Angeles is nauseating for a resident of New York City who is a fan of San Francisco teams. I'm not a die-hard 49ers fan but they share a division with the Los Angeles Rams and besides, I can't fathom ever rooting for any team from LA. Thus the New England Patriots are my team this time around even though they are division rivals to the Buffalo Bills, which is the team that I have half-heartedly followed ever since moving to New

Early 1990's Durham Bulls

Disclaimer: So I said last week that the International League celebration would be coming to an end then and while you think I'm breaking my word for today's Fresh Fitted Friday  selection, I'm actually well within the rules because this Durham Bulls cap dates back to when  they were members of the Single-A Carolina League. The first year the Bulls wore this logo on their cap was in 1988 but I have a feeling that the paper tags that came attached to New Era caps didn't begin to appear until sometime in the early 1990's. If anyone has any proof otherwise, I'm all ears however a nother reason I presume this one to be from then is because of the tags on the sweatband. My apologies for the crummy quality of these photos but would you believe that they're from 2011? If you're ever been in awe about how old some of these caps are, just remember that some of the photos of these old caps are almost 10 years old themselves! Now, I must

Pre-1992 Rochester Red Wings

I'm glad to be getting back into a regular groove of posting and hopefully you are enjoying the posts, too! I also hope that you won't mind that this week's Fresh Fitted Friday selection is actually a snapback! Truth be told, you can't even be mad at this one because the material on the crown is Fresh Mesh plus it's yet another Rochester Red Wings cap! The details surrounding the years this cap might have been worn are fuzzy —as is the embroidery on the top right portion of the cap logo—seeing as how I can't seem to find an exact match for the logo via my usual resources.  The solo sweatband tag on here tells me that this cap definitely has some age on it and it actually reminds me of my 1992 Tidewater Tides cap that once belonged to Kevin Baez. Speaking of Kevin Baez... Baez played the 1994 season in Rochester. He's seen here wearing the cap logo used from 1992 through that season however I believe the red brim was only wor

1994 Albany-Colonie Yankees, Part 1

In celebration of the first Spring Training exhibition games of 2018, I’ve got something extra special to share for this week’s Fresh Fitted Friday : a 1994 Albany-Colonie Yankees cap. I'm glad to finally check this cap off my wishlist. Well, really it's just moving into the second tier because I'd like to eventually find one without the red button and eyelets but enough with the nitpicking! If you look closely you can tell that the tags that were ripped out are ones that were used from 1994-1996. Because the Double-A affiliate's last season in Albany was 1994, this cap could only be from that year. I've seen the MILB batterman on caps that could be from 1993 but I'm holding firm in my estimation that this cap is from 1994 due to the ripped out size tags used in the photo above this one. If you are familiar with my cap wishlist, you know most are there because I love their logo design but some are also there for the rarity. This cap meets both

1984 Everett Giants

Trend alert! So for the third straight week we are looking at a Class A Short Season team however unlike the last few posts, this week the team is not from the New York-Penn League but rather its west coast counterpart. I've previously posted about hats of the Everett Giants (now AquaSox) of the Northwest League and based on all of the images I've seen, this particular version was only worn during their inaugural season in 1984. The  only images I've found of an Everett Giants player wearing this version of the cap are in the  black and white photographs used for the baseball cards from the 1984 Cramer set and I think I see some  discrepancies between these two caps. While my cap has a green underbrim it seems as though Joe Olker is seen here wearing what appears to be a grey underbrim on his cap. I'm at loss as to why a black and white photo was used for a baseball card as recently as 1984 but, alas. Side note: I have a friend who is

1963 Baltimore Orioles hat - Fresh Fitted Friday!!!!

As a reader of this blog you'll know that in anticipation of spending Thanksgiving in Baltimore, I've spent the last few weeks writing about Orioles-themed hats and I'm happy to say that the peak of Maryland-fest is this 1963 Orioles cap. Unless you are a hardcore O's fan, you'd never know that the Orioles ever wore a hat without a bird on it but they did wear this particular logo for just one season in 1963.  It's a known fact that any given year's baseball card set usually uses photos taken the previous season so after hunting down cards from the 1964 set to find images of this cap, I found that most of the cards featured players wearing caps with the "Lead-off Bird" instead of the "Orange B" logo.  The "Orange B" logo must not have been as much of a fan favorite as "Lead-off Bird" so I'm guessing the Orioles ended up reverting back to the older logo for most of the 1963 season b
