Missives of a Baseball Milquetoast

As I was considering what to cover in this week's post, I thought it might be fun to write about an Air Force-themed cap because today is the anniversary of the signing of the National Security Act of 1947, which marked its establishment as an independent branch of the United States military. While looking through the caps I have not yet written about I noticed the only aviation-related ones have more to do with space travel and I have already earmarked dates for those posts. I did have a Peninsula Pilots retro cap that I've been wanting to highlight for a while and even though they might be named after maritime pilots, I think it's time to let it fly anyway! The New Era flagship store in Buffalo got really close to the original logo here. I will hopefully someday soon get a chance to attend a Coastal Plain League to see the current incarnation of the Peninsula Pilots that plays at War Memorial Stadium in Hampton. Summer just started feeling like it was in full swing but the heat letting up in the middle of August is a sure sign the season is about to wrap up. When you think that most MLB teams now have less than 40 games to play, it really does seem like time has flown so with that feeling coinciding with National Aviation Day this coming Monday, August 19, this Peninsula Pilots cap gets the spotlight in this  week's post. I have previously given props to my Buffalo homie  @yellowsub73  who came through in the clutch big time by letting me know about about the listing for this Pilots cap that is in remarkably better shape than the other one I own which  I wrote about over five years ago  and  was signed by former Pilots pitcher Dan Sullivan. Ok so maybe the undervisor is a little tattered but that can be expected for a cap that is over 30 years old! Plus I love that the last place on this cap's journey seems to have been a sort of thrift store within the Kiln Creek ...

Welp I ran out of Carolina League teams to show y'all but that's not shocking considering it's a small league after all.  Until 2016 there were only eight teams in the Carolina League and I've already written about six (seven including last week's Winston-Salem Spirits cap) of the cities with current teams, as well as the Durham Bulls who are no longer in the league.  As for the other cities (both former and current) in the league, there isn't a hat that I've felt the a strong enough need to obtain about besides, of course, the crown jewel of my Carolina League collection: the Peninsula Pilots. Objectively, the logo is nothing special and could easily be confused with a Detroit Pistons hat. In fact, the only other Pilots hat that I ever found was mislabeled as a Pistons hat in an eBay listing.
