Jackson Generals (1994-99 Hat Club Retro)

Last week’s Música de Memphis cap was a great accessory to have on my trip to Mexico and I’m so happy to be back in the States in time for March 4 which is an unofficial holiday called March Forth due to its name being a homophone of the date.

In reading up on the holiday I learned that the full version of its name is March Forth and Do Something Day but I think “March Forth” gets the message across just fine. My research also brought to my attention that since 2017, March 4 has been used as the day to celebrate Marching Music Day.

Because the “march” music genre traces its roots back to its military origins, this seems like an excellent opportunity to bring out my Jackson Generals retro from Hat Club.

The five stars on the cap logo worn by the Jackson Generals of the Texas League is a reference to the highest military rank in the United States. Interestingly enough two stars was the highest rank received by Andrew Jackson, who is the inspiration for both the team’s moniker as well as the town in Mississippi where it once played.

I picked this cap up from Hat Club in 2019 which by that time meant getting a Made in U.S.A. version was most likely not going to happen. Made in China it is, I suppose.

The five stars on the cap’s front and four stars on the MILB batterman here proves this one clearly goes to the nines

In addition to going to the nines, this hat also goes to the 90s! I’ve written about this Texas League version of the Jackson Generals cap before but that one was of the vintage “Fresh Mesh” variety from the early 1990s as opposed to this week’s style which is a retro of the two-tone design which first appeared in 1994.

I’ve also written about the now-defunct Jackson Generals of the Southern League who sadly played their last season in 2019. Now that there are no teams that go by that name, the time is right for another club to take it on however I’d like to see it used by a city not named after Andrew Jackson.

In American schools they venerate the military efforts of the seventh president of the United States however not enough time is spent discussing Jackson’s role as a proponent of the Indian Removal Act of 1830.

The dichotomy is vast between Jackson’s heroic actions and his unscrupulous misdeeds toward Indians thus I encourage anyone reading this to march forth and do their own research on him!

If there’s any team that is ripe to inherit the moniker of “Generals” it is the Fredericksburg Nationals, who I just happened to write about two weeks ago. George Washington is inarguably the greatest general in American history and the “George” alternate cap Fredericksburg wears makes the name change a perfect fit.

One possibility that I had not considered until now is perhaps there’s a naming rights issue blocking any team from being known as the Generals. If that is the case, hopefully another team can pick up the name eventually but in the meantime I’d like to see the Fayetteville Woodpeckers bring back Fayetteville's old Generals logo for some games at least!

This week's Fresh Fitted Friday selection is not going on the Trading Block however please don't hesitate to reach out if you want any other cap from that list and you are willing to part with any of the hats on my Wish List.
