I have had a memorable month of baseball thus far this August, which was kickstarted by my first-ever trip to Cleveland's ballpark. That was succeeded by a midweek trip to Yankee Stadium when the Seattle Mariners were in town playing the Yankees and followed that up with my first, and likely only, Staten Island FerryHawks game of the year less than a week later.
I was also lucky to catch the opening game of the Mets-Padres series at Citi Field and then went back to Yankee Stadium for the middle game of the Yankees-Blue Jays series I mentioned in last week's post. The cherry on top of all these activities was another mid-series game, but this time it was in Queens as I had to watch the Brewers defeat the Mets this past Wednesday.
I am hoping for at least two more trips to CitiField this season as the Houston Astros are in town this weekend and my San Francisco Giants will be here to take on the Mets the following weekend. The Giants and Mets are both terrible this year, so that will be a bittersweet series, but I think it will be good to see my team even in the midst of this historically disastrous season.
I have a special hat planned for next week's Labor Day Weekend edition of Fresh Fitted Friday, so this week's post has us celebrating New York baseball history a week before my Giants get here. That said, I am excited today to break out the only New York Giants retro cap design that I have ever been able to purchase from Ebbets Field Flannels!

The white on that tag sticking out was so annoying to me, I ended up removing it entirely from the sweatband using a little seam ripper I had nearby. I did not do as great of a job as I had hoped for, so I will forgo sharing photos of my handiwork for the time being! |
Thanks to the official MLB license held by '47, longtime customers of Ebbets were finally able to have the Seattle-based company's iconic cap construction be the backdrop for classic logos of their most loved big league teams as the two collaborated for the "Golden Age Ballcap Collection" in 2023.
I was so ecstatic to at long last be able to get an MLB production that I doubled up on the Giants cap whose embroidered logo is meant to be as historically accurate as possible, which is a task one could only rely on Ebbets to complete. After years of accumulating a mighty collection of minor league logos worn by Giants affiliates, I was thrilled to now have a New York Giants cap from Ebbets.
Nothing is perfect though, and while I had no issue whatsoever with the cap's front logo, it should be mentioned that Ebbets caps had in recent years been plagued with inconsistencies in the stitching of their sweatband tag, which is especially aggravating considering the $75 price point that Ebbets set for this special release.
Because the Giants caps in this collection sold out so quickly, getting a replacement was not possible, so the only options left to me were to either accept my fate or ask for a refund for one of the caps. I chose the former, but the experience led me to slowly sour on Ebbets to the point that I only ordered caps from them a handful of times over the next two years.
While I have not bought a cap from Ebbets as of yet this year, I am choosing to focus on the bright spots of my purchase history with the company. I waited a long while to own this week's cap and must admit if there is ever another Golden Age collection which features a Giants cap in a black and orange colorway, I would likely come out of Ebbets retirement for that!
