1957 Miami Marlins (International League) Retro

One of my favorite things to do when I find myself waiting for a train or bus is popping through my favorite hat sites to see if any new releases catch my eye. Historically, the most visited ones were Hat Club, eCapacity, MyFitteds, and Ebbets Field Flannels, although the latter has fallen out of rotation due to their recent change of vision and direction.

Through Ebbets' Triple-Play" deal, I was able to score three caps for a fair price, and if I picked up an extra one, I would meet the minimum for free shipping, for which I am a sucker! If only they offered a "Grand Slam" option, I would have pounced on that too. The Triple-Play deal no longer exists, so buyers must wait for a sale if they would rather not pay $68 (gasp) for a cap.

Out of habit tonight, I browsed to Ebbets' site, and while there were no new caps since the last time I checked, I did notice their Memorial Day offering 25% off sitewide. There were a few logos I never got around to purchasing before, but at $51 a piece, I'm still holding out. Besides, I've got plenty of their caps in my backlog, plus I've got a trip planned to Miami next week.

My first and only time in Miami was celebrating New Year's Eve in 2014, and thankfully this time it's not only baseball season, but my San Francisco Giants will be in town playing the Marlins. While I'm not sure which ballpark we are counting for the Athletics, I've been to both Oakland Coliseum and Sutter Health Park, which means Miami's will be my 18th one visited!

You might look at the blue and orange and think this is some sort of New York Mets-adjacent cap, but it is in fact a retro of the one worn by the 1957 Miami Marlins, who at that time were the International League affiliate of the Philadelphia Phillies.

This is the second week in a row in which I have featured an Ebbets cap where the tags were still attached. I love popping these things off whenever I get the chance!

Now for some history as we look upon the back of the cap to say that the Marlins left for San Juan, Puerto Rico, at the beginning of the 1961 season, though sadly a hurricane destroyed their stadium, prompting the team to move to Charleston, West Virginia. According to Baseball Reference, that team relocated south again the next year to become the Atlanta Crackers.

Continuing on with this delightful tale of yore, this era of the Atlanta Crackers only lasted until the Milwaukee Braves moved to Atlanta in 1966, thus prompting their International League team to move to Richmond, Virginia. That partnership remained until the the Braves top affiliate became the Gwinnett Braves in 2009 with the San Francisco Giants filling that void in 2010 by shifting their Double-A affiliate in Norwich, Connecticut to become the Richmond Flying Squirrels.

Happy to know I could find a way for this week's post to tangentially segue from my planned trip to Miami next weekend onto Georgia—which is where I was last weekend with that state being a focal point of my most recent post— and then briefly touching on my home state of Virginia before finally ending with my San Francisco Giants, whom I am so excited to see next week.

This week's Fresh Fitted Friday selection is not going on the Trading Block however please don't hesitate to reach out if you want any other cap from that list and you are willing to part with any of the hats on my Wish List.
