Quad City Rapids River Bandits (2026 retro)

My standard process with the blog is to put forth lighthearted topics on the blog; however, today being the 25th anniversary of the September 11 terror attacks perpetrated on the United States in 2001 is urging me to honor the solemn occasion in a meaningful way in today's Fresh Fitted Friday post.

Looking back at the archives, I am surprised that I did not properly commemorate this anniversary in previous years (2015 and 2020) when it occurred on a Friday; however, in my 1921 New York Giants "Roman Pro Cap Co." Retro Cap post, I did at least select a New York team's cap for that 20th anniversary post, which I  published a day early on September 10, 2001.

I've written about New York teams recently, so I decided instead to honor Welles Crowther today, who was a volunteer firefighter and equities trader by profession who worked in the South Tower and saved as many as 18 lives during the September 11 attacks. There are many stories of people who lost their lives saving others that day, but Crowther is who I salute today.

In the aftermath of the attack, witnesses recounted how Crowther performed these altruistic acts of heroism while wearing his trusty red handkerchief that he had carried since boyhood. The powerful image this brings to mind befits a tribute to the "Man in the Red Bandana" with this Quad Cities River Bandit cap for this week's post.

I wrote about my vintage River Bandits cap, which I estimate to be from 1992. Back in 2014, however, I have since taken it out of rotation due to it being a bit too worn out at this point. Thankfully, this retro is made of a more durable polyester material that I expect to last way more than its predecessor.

I am still loving the grey under visors that current on-field caps have, which does a great job combining the 1990s aesthetic with a black sweatband that will not deteriorate like ones with white fabric.

On a day where we are all asked to “remember," I do exactly that and while I know the stars here were designed as a nod to the four levels of minor league baseball, they simply just remind me of the Stars and Stripes and just how lucky I am to have been born in the United States.

If you have not yet visited the 9/11 Memorial and Museum at the World Trade Center, I highly recommend you prioritize it on your next trip to New York City but whether you have been or not, I hope you are honoring those we lost on September 11 in ways that are meaningful to you. And if you'd like to learn more about Crowther's acts that day, you can do so via this link.

This week's Fresh Fitted Friday selection is not going on the Trading Block however please don't hesitate to reach out if you want any other cap from that list and you are willing to part with any of the hats on my Wish List.
