Rochester Red Wings "Flower City" (New Era Buffalo)

I enjoyed writing about a Buffalo-exclusive last week and am keeping the tradition going today with my Rochester Red Wings "Flower City" custom from the flagship shop. This week's Fresh Fitted Friday selection plays up the team's former affiliation with the Minnesota Twins and their iconic powder blue uniforms, and the team's name itself propels the "flight" theme forward too.

Major kudos are due to Rochester for consistently hosting a team called the Red Wings since 1929 without once considering a rebrand. Even more interesting is if you combine the era they were affiliated with the St. Louis Cardinals (1929-1960) with their years with the Baltimore Orioles (1961-2002), that's 74 consecutive years of being a "baby birds" farm team.

The interlocking "FC" here is a clear nod to Minnesota's famed "TC" (Twin Cities) logo, and according to sportslogos.net, the Red Wings introduced this "Flower City" alternate logo during the first year of their Twins affiliation era, which lasted from 2003 to 2020.

I am an unabashed fan of throwbacks (and fauxbacks in this case) and would love to see how the powder blue would look on the rear of a rail cap with a white front done in the style of the 1970s Twins batting helmets that inspired the 2014 All-Star Game "Home Run Derby" caps.

The powder blue crown replaces the navy the Red Wings used, and I am glad I never jumped on buying that cap the first time around because this colorway is far superior in my view. I also love the way the blue plays against the green undershirt here.

My memories of the Red Wings are all from their Orioles years; however, during that time, their cap and uniform logos were decidedly plain, and it wasn't until the later end of that affiliation in 1995 that the team's cap grew some wings. I chose this image of Butch Davis wearing the hat because he was a player I saw on lots of different International League teams over the years.

The Red Wings are currently the Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals and just last night defeated the Memphis Redbirds in the Game 3 final of the International League Championship series. Their next and last challenge of the year is to face the Oklahoma City Comets tomorrow in Las Vegas for a single-game playoff series to determine the Triple-A champions for 2026. 

The International League "battle of the birds" was a neat occurrence, but the matchup would have been even more special if each team was affiliated with a big-league bird! It is a straight four-hour drive from Memphis to St. Louis, which makes it a sensible relationship; however, there is an opportunity to explore the possibility of Baltimore and Rochester syncing up again.

The journey from Rochester to Baltimore is only just a little over six hours, but it is one that is familiar to many Orioles alumni during their 41-year partnership. Restoring that Baltimore-Rochester alliance paves the way for my hometown Norfolk Tides to be linked back up with the Mets.

A return to that engagement allows for the Nationals to link back up with Syracuse, who hosted their Triple-A club from 2009 through 2018. I've always considered Syracuse Squires to be a great name, especially for a Washington affiliate. We are years away from an International League reshuffling, but I still want to be prepared for a Syracuse rebrand when that time comes!

I want to close by highlighting another connection between Rochester and Minnesota, which is each's claim to supremacy when it comes to production of flour, with the former being known as "Flour City" before Minneapolis overtook that title. Rochester continued producing flour but also became a well-known horticulture hub, which is how it became known as "Flower City" later on.
