After posting to this blog for over a dozen years, I sometimes ask myself if I have run out of ideas to write about or if I am conveniently revisiting themes to the point of there no longer being a point in continuing on. And then there are moments when I consider the significance of those themes and the importance of continually reminding myself of the values that define me.
Earlier this week I realized this coming Sunday was the NYC Pride March and instantly thought it would be fitting to feature a Charleston Rainbows hat for this week's Fresh Fitted Friday post. I wanted to know how long it had been since I had last written about the team so I dug through the archives only find this post from almost exactly ten years ago, which was the first—and most recent—time I had written about the Rainbows.
I felt chills reading my thoughts on the Pulse Nightclub shooting in 2016, which frankly is a sensation I expect to sense again in ten years when I think back on how the San Francisco Giants fumbled their opportunity to address the the team’s lack of alignment regarding the on-field cap selected to be worn for the team’s June 12 Pride Night game.
I am still processing my own understanding of the events as well as creating space to grieve for those hurt by the Giants missing every chance they had to make things right in the aftermath. I suppose the one bright spot in all this has been San Francisco's CEO Larry Baer appearing on KNBR 680 to at least make an attempt in mending the situation.
Damage control operations are a job duty expected of those in ownership positions, but still I commend Baer for his efforts and am interested in seeing how the Giants learn from this experience going forward. If there was ever a chance for a rainbow to lift us out of the gloom, it would be for this Charleston Rainbows cap to bring us into that bright, sunny spot.
| I love the way the crown on vintage caps sits lower without pressing so closely to the noggin like the "Low Profile" caps of recent years. |
| As I've noted in my 1993 Fort Wayne Wizards and 1993 Hickory Crawdads posts where I found the same sweatband tag combinations, I expect this cap to be from that year as the 59Fifty tag debuted in 1993. |
This week's cap features a logo I've been chasing for years however is a bit small for my head so it’s going on the Trading Block! If you are a 7 1/4, please don't hesitate to reach out to propose a trade for this (or any other cap from that list) if you have something you think I might like. Bonus points if it's something from my Wish List!
As always, thanks for coming back to read about baseball hat geekery. If you'd like to discuss a trade or simply just chat about hats, please feel free to connect via the following social sites:
